This is also the oldest schools rugby fixture dating back to 1906 and they celebrated their 100 years in 2006 with a grand show at the Bogambara Stadium which was also the venue of the first match over 100 years ago. Kingswood college is known as the school who brought rugby to Sri Lanka.

Trinity’s vibrant number eight Sean Foster with the ball in hand makes a valiant attempt to breakthrough before completing his double as Trinity College registered a roaring 41-0 win over Kingswood College in the schools rugby league match at Pallekele yesterday.

Trinity College romped to a confidence-boosting 41-0 triumph over home town rivals Kingswood College to maintain their unbeaten run in the schools’ rugby tournament at the end of their third outing at Pallekele yesterday. Kingswood had no answer to the pace, power and poise of the Lions as the latter led 17 points to nothing at the breather. The lions accumulated their points off three goals and four tries whilst blanking the Kinswoodians.

It was just eight minutes into the game when fly half Rehan Weerakoon having received a clean pass from scrum half Somasiri went galloping down, mid left to draw first blood. As full back Mohamed Sheik’s kick was spot on they effectively led 7 nil.
Greater possession and good coordination among the forwards and the backs richly rewarded the Lions when makeshift winger Dinuk Nayakaratne touched down far left to score an unconverted try and the Lions’ increased their lead to 12-0. Kingswoodians who were never in the game thus far could not prevent the Lions running circles in their defense when Nayakaratne completed his double off an unconverted try in similar fashion to mount the score to 17-0. Upon resumption Kingswoodians especially their winger and centre the Perera twins Oshan and Lavanka and occasionally their skipper and fly half Jananath Dharmawradna set the base for recovery, but lack of support and disjointed play denied them of any headway in the process. With the Lions looking increasingly slick, and with a plentiful supply of quick turnover ball, number eight Sean Foster who had an excellent game whilst carrying a hamstring injury scored two back-to-back tries amid glowing accolades. As Shiek put over his second attempt successfully the lions extended the lead to 29-0.
As the game progressed the Lions started to run riot, given the perfect platform to perform on thanks to a sterling effort from their relentless forwards. It was the 28th minute of play when the lanky lock forward Randika Alwis receiving a pass from a maul in mid felid made a sizzling run along left flank. As he was hauled down just a stride short of the target, he exhibited his determination in such zest to get back on his feet to cover the remaining distance before he dived far left to score a scintillating try which received a standing ovation from the crowds. Taking the game beyond the reach of the Kingswoodians, the lions, elevated their lead to 34 points to nil.

In the wake of a series of patiently controlled phases, Lions’ gamble in running a penalty instead of going for goal paid handsome dividends as flanker Savinda Unambuwa scored a classic try at the dying stages as the Lions registered a yet another terrific win under their dynamic skipper Murad Ramzeen. Dilroy Fernando had fine control of the game as referee.
