Former Trinitian Sean Wijesinghe represented Trinity College Rugby in 2000 and 2001.

He is currently the leading Third Row Forward of Kandy Sports Club and has now been appointed as the new Sri Lanka rugby captain for the forthcoming Asian Five Nations championship.

Sri Lanka will play against the United Arab Emirates in the first game on April 23 in Colombo.

Wijesinghe was a member of last year’s Asian Division One championship winning team and played a tremendous part in the team’s success. An ex-Trinitian Wijesinghe is one of the best products of Sri Lanka rugby and was a regular member of the side over the past few years.

Last year’s Kandy captain, fly half Fazil Marija was named as deputy to Wijesinghe.

The current pool of 33 players will be reduced to 23 this week.

It is the first time that Sri Lanka qualified to compete in the top segment of this tournament after the Asian Rugby Tournament was re-designed with the new format in 2007 and serves as the qualifying round of the Asian region for the World Cup.

Sri Lanka will host two games against the United Arab Emirates (April 23) and Hong Kong (May 7) and also play two games away against Kazakhstan on May 14 and Japan on May 21.
